Dear Liquid Pork Gun:

I move that we continue our longstanding debate using my blog as a forum.

Here is my latest point.

Human progress in the form of technology is largely useless, because as our quality of life improves, the quality of life that we come to expect will also improve.

However, technological progress does have some value, because of the emotional satisfaction garnered from the act of invention.

So, it is actually the process that is important, not the results. The results are immaterial, as long as we feel we have accomplished something. But ultimately, people are not better off simply because they live in a more advanced society.

What about the advancement of women? Birth control, and machines that make it so that brute strength is no longer required to accomplish many tasks.

Not to mention that the advancement of knowledge has produced scientific explanations for things that were previously only explained by religion. I don't think that science is a substitute for religion, but it does place reasonable bounds on religion.

This isn't an "airtight" argument I know, but I figured I'd take a couple minutes and post before I went to bed.

In many primitive societies, gender roles are much more fluid than one might think, at least according to the book you bought me!

And, why is it a benefit to place bounds on religion?

The real reason why religion is a problem anyway is because we have a bunch of different cultural and religious groups trying to live together in a huge society, much larger than the tribe-sized groups best for human socialization. And that problem is caused by technology making huge, unmanageable states possible.
